Launched with a first meeting in 2005, the “Year of Physics”, the Diffusion-Fundamentals Conferences aim to bring together researchers from academia and industry every two years who deal with the different phenomena of spreading as occurring in Nature, Technology and Society.

The output of the conferences, notably including abstracts and full papers of the conference contributions, are scheduled to be presented in the Diffusion-Fundamentals Open-Access Online Journal, which includes the assignment of a DOI number. These options have become available via the auspices offered by the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities, which contains also promotional material for participation in the conferences as well as recommendations regarding the focus areas for future conferences.

The arrangement of the conference by the local organizers may clearly follow their own intentions. The Editorial Team's involvement includes making suggestions for local organizers of future conferences during the sessions held at the conferences.

Objects under consideration include atoms and molecules as the elementary constituents of our matter as well as biological species in their environment and even us humans and our material and immaterial “products”.

Contributions may deal with the observation and classification of the phenomena as well as with the elucidation of the underlying mechanisms (including their modelling and analytical treatment) and options of their exploitation in technology and society. The Diffusion-Fundamentals Conferences (just as Diffusion-Fundamentals Online) thus aim to create a forum for discussion bringing together scientists from disciplines as diverse as archaeology, ecology, economics, epidemiology, ethnology, linguistics, and sociology with biologists, chemists, physicists, mathematicians, and engineers.
